NAIDOC WEEK 2022

Water Polo NSW would like to acknowledge and pay our respect to the traditional custodians of the lands and waters on which we play our sport. Water Polo NSW acknowledges all Aboriginal Elders, past, present and emerging.

Our sport is blessed to be able to get together to play water polo and engage our community not just across our State but across Australia.

NAIDOC Week occurs annually in July and is a chance to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This week allows all of us to reach into our communities and learn more about and from each other. Water Polo NSW encourages an environment that is welcoming and inclusive to all, our vision is to Make Our Sport, Your Sport. We are a community able to welcome in and celebrate individuals with a diverse range of cultural backgrounds and from as young as 5 to members still playing in their 80’s.

There is so much we can learn a sportspeople and humans be embracing and acknowledging each other’s similarities and differences.

A prime example is to look to 2022 Person of the Year Award winner Ash Barty AO. WPNSW would like to congratulate Ash on her very deserving award win announced during the National NAIDOC Week Awards.

Ash epitomises the character and traits we can all take into our competitions and events. Determined, gritty on court while remaining so humble and graceful to all those she encounters. Play hard but don’t forget many of the impressions that count come not from your performance in the pool but from how you treat your teammates, opponents, officials, and yourself.

WPNSW intends to continue working alongside the Traditional landowners to help provide a community that is welcoming and respectful of the rich and diverse culture of this incredible country.

To do this, we must Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!
