Water Polo NSW would like to congratulate Thomas Whalan on his Life Membership of Water Polo Australia (WPA), awarded at the 2023 WPA Annual General Meeting.
Whalan had an outstanding career in water polo as a player, raising the profile of Australian water polo both domestically and internationally.
He began his playing career as a 12 year old with the Sydney University Water Polo Club. At the age of 15, he was selected in the Australian Youth team and toured Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia.
Whalan continued to compete for the Sydney University Lions in the WPA AWL winning three titles with the Club. He continues to participate in the Sydney Metropolitan Competition where he represents Sydney University in their Men’s 3rd grade team.
Whalan is one of a handful of Australian athletes to have competed at four Olympic Games, representing Australia in Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012. During his career he represented Australia in over 350 internationals.
Whalan has contributed as a director and as chairperson of Water Polo Australia, joining the WPA Board in 2012 and serving as President from 2017-2020.
Whalan also generously gives his time and shares his knowledge and experience to encourage performance pathway water polo athletes.
Congratulations and thank you for your outstanding contributions Thomas.
