Stewart Moar formed the foundation upon which the Sydney University Lions is based. He transformed the Club, that was essentially a social water polo club, into one of Australia’s most dominant water polo clubs.

"Stewie", as we all knew him, had a social conscience and personal philosophy of giving to his community. He instilled these two great values in his two marvellous sons, that are still contributing to water polo and the Lions.

Stewie became active in Sydney University Men’s Water Polo Club in about 1995, as Treasurer, National League Manager and President. The National League team he managed had his two sons Ryan and James.

Upon becoming President, he commenced transforming the SU Men’s Club from a social club to a club with a more professional foundation, and instilled in the Club the culture of team commitment and friendships that it has today.

He established good working relationships with Water Polo Australia, the National League and NSW Water Polo, and more particularly Sydney University Sport.

In 2002, Stewie managed SU Men’s National League team to its first championship in Perth. His National League game debriefings, with Coach “Nipper” Fanning, "Greggy" Turner, “Rossco” Skeels and a glass of red, sorted many problems out.

With Stewie as President, the SU Men’s Club produced numerous Australian Captains and Olympians.

There are very few people the Club can claim, that without their contribution, enthusiasm and drive, the Sydney University Men’s Lions would not be one of Australia’s premier water polo Clubs today. Our Stewie is at the top of that group.

Stewie was a dear friend and mentor to many both within and outside the water polo community. He will be sadly missed but his legacy remains a foundation of the Lions water polo.

The Sydney University Men’s Water Polo Club honours our great friend Stewart Moar and his family and acknowledge his contribution to what it means to be a “Lion”.

Our deepest thoughts are with the Moar Family.
